What is Corn Silk?

Corn silk is the fine, thread-like strands (stigmas) that grow from the top of an ear of corn. It has a long history in traditional Chinese, Native American, Turkish and European herbal practice, where it is typically brewed as a tea to support the urinary tract.*

Why it's in Advanced Kidney Support

Corn silk is what herbalists call a demulcent: a plant rich in mucilage that forms a soothing film over irritated tissue. In the urinary tract that means a calming effect on the lining of the bladder and the passages below it.* It also acts as a natural shielding agent, helping keep crystals from sticking to kidney cells, and it is rich in plant compounds, especially flavonoids like maysin, which act as antioxidants.*

What the research shows

  • Animal research (American Journal of Clinical and Experimental Urology, 2023): In an animal model of kidney stones, Zea mays extract reduced calcium oxalate crystal deposits, raised protective urinary magnesium and citrate, and improved kidney filtration markers.*
  • Lab research (ACS Omega, 2023): Corn silk polysaccharides reduced oxidative damage in kidney cells by limiting how many tiny calcium oxalate crystals the cells took in.*
  • Review (Molecules, 2012): Corn silk is rich in flavonoids such as maysin, which act as antioxidants, and has a long record of traditional use for the urinary tract.*

These results come from animal and lab studies. Human research on corn silk is still limited, and we describe it that way.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same corn silk I can buy as a tea?

It is the same plant part. Advanced Kidney Support uses dried corn silk powder, so you get a consistent 200 mg in every serving without brewing.

Does corn silk contain corn sugar or gluten?

No. Corn silk is the plant's stigma, not the kernel, and it contains no corn syrup. Corn is naturally gluten free.
