Every March, National Kidney Month puts a spotlight on two organs most of us rarely think about until something goes wrong. Your kidneys filter your entire blood supply many times a day, balance fluids and minerals, and help regulate blood pressure. They do it quietly, which is part of the problem.
Why it matters
About 1 in 7 U.S. adults has chronic kidney disease, and nearly 9 in 10 of them don't know it. Kidney changes usually cause no symptoms early on, so the only way to know where you stand is to ask.
Two numbers to ask for at your next physical
- eGFR, from a routine blood test, which estimates how well your kidneys are filtering.
- Urine albumin (UACR), from a simple urine test, which checks for protein your kidneys should be holding on to.
Ask your provider for both, keep a copy of your results, and compare year to year. Our free doctor visit checklists make it easier.
Everyday habits that support healthy kidneys
- Drink enough water for your body and activity level.
- Know your blood pressure and blood sugar numbers. They are two of the biggest factors in long-term kidney health. Read more.
- Check labels on supplements and medications, and talk with your provider before taking pain relievers regularly.
- If kidney stones run in your family, learn about oxalates. Dr. Chris's simple guide.
